Costa Urges Bosnia to Accelerate EU Reform Process

(MENAFN) European Council President António Costa on Monday called on Bosnia and Herzegovina to accelerate key reforms needed to move its European Union accession process forward, saying the country is close to entering the next stage of negotiations.

According to reports, Costa made the remarks in Sarajevo at the beginning of a Western Balkans visit, emphasizing that Bosnia now faces a critical decision on its EU future and the reforms required to achieve it.

“You are only a few steps away from the next tangible phase in the opening of accession negotiations – now is the time to focus on your goal and accelerate the pace of reforms,” he said.

He added that while the path toward EU membership is demanding, there are still relatively achievable measures that could significantly advance Bosnia’s candidacy if alignment with EU legislation is prioritized.

“The road ahead is demanding but there are some low-hanging fruits to seize if you deliver on the alignment with the European Union legislation,” he said.

According to reports, Costa stressed that closer legal and institutional alignment with the EU could quickly unlock progress in Bosnia’s membership bid, urging authorities to maintain momentum in the reform process.
